Cinquain Volcano poem .

LI: To write a multi verse cinquain poem that describes the journey of a sleeping maunga that erupts

For more our learning linking into Inquiry we have been taught what cinquain poems are . What is a conquain poem? A cinquain poem has 5 lines and in these 5 lines each and everyone of them has a different purpose, the first line which is the top line always has to be a noun which is a name or something you can touch. Line 2 needs 2 adjectives and only 2 adjectives that describe the word in the first line which should be a noun. The middle line has to have 3 verbs that most typically end in a ‘ing’ but can also end with a ‘ly’ too, these words are supposed to describe what your noun does and what are there most common actions that they do. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun, and last but not least we have Line 5 this line is a synonym, to the first line, synonym is a word with a similar meaning to the noun! This was a cool way to adventure into our topic in a different way, with what is not normal on a regular basis !

Rounding Numbers

Last week for maths group 4 has been learning how to round numbers to tens , tenths , hundreds and thousands , for a better understanding we have this poem to remind us how rounding numbers work! the poem goes like this ,

 Look at your number..

4 or less ignore the rest.

5 or more add 1 more.

here is group 4 DLO on how to round! .

Volcano Infographic

This term LS2 has been doing some reasearch about “Earths fiery giants” aka volcanos , for this assignment we worked in pair so we could learn how to learn with and from eachother , this lead us to making posters about the four main types of volcanos. cinder cones, composite volcanoes, shield volcanoes, and lava domes.

Next we picked out a image that has the same type of volcano – eg; mauna loa is a sheild volcano ) so then we would explain about sheild volcano and about mauna loa volcano!.

I enjoyed this task because i get to learn more about volcanoes!

Why Maungarei sleeps..

In the times gone by , there was  a cruel and furious volcano named..Maungarei. She was one of those bad tempered, And brutal middle children who never got the experiance of love She had enough and just wanted to be normal like the others.Maungarei thought about how her cruel family treated her and had enough of this. Suddenly her anger grew bigger and bigger, it was like she couldn’t control her emotions anymore.

Maungarei  started to rumble and groan, The ground started to shake roughly creating an intense earthquake, villagers were screaming, everyone was like cats and dogs running in all directions. Maungarei started to feel stronger and powerful than ever before , taking advantage of the villagers.  Maungarei’s siblings saw a side of Maungarei they had never seen before Maungareis siblings decided it was to make a change.

“Im sorry , i really didn’t mean it” Statted Maungarei apologetically

Maungarei was grown enough to realise villagers thought she was a very fussy volcano. The villagers and the other Maunga were trembling with fear, families trying to clear their buildings and others just having no clue what was happening Maungarei then felt something she had never felt before.., It was then Maungarei started to regret her choices and regretted She tried really hard to control her raging anger Volcanic ash and fuming rocks started bursting out and onto the villages and towns. Maungarei then started to listen to the chaotic screaming and watch villagers run around in fear in their eyes..

“Where are you all going! , yous only see the bad in me..give me a chance..please!” Maungarei cried.

Maungarei slowly started to calm down, earthquakes started to become lower, And the villages and towns no longer had chaos, Maungarei parents quickly and calmly ran up to her and apologized for causing her to feel that she was the lonely middle child and she could of been payed more attention, her siblings did the same with a very guilty expression on there face, for causing Maungarei trouble and rudely reminding her of her role in a mean way on purpose, Maungarei didn’t really want to forgive them yet for how much cause they gave her, But she did. This had made Maungarei behave and taught her a lesson from now on to learn which sorts of behaviour work well and which don’t, and to improve yourself without regretting your decisions. It was then and now Maungarei had made her choice in order to prove herself to the world and make things better she chose to sleep and never wake up again it was for the best. Maungarei proved to herself she can be better than this , we now know all maungarei ever wanted was to have the feeling of being loved. We should never know when it’s time for her to rise again

I enjoyed this assignment because i got to lesrn more about porquoi stories

Tangiwai disaster

LI: Use your smart searching skills to find 3 interesting facts about the Tangiwai disaster.

For reading we learned about the Tangiwai disaster. We watched a video that explained the tangiwai railway bridge disaster. We made notes with vocab (words we don’t know) and questions to know. One of the things we learned about was open and close questions. Open questions are saying the answer but adding more details and closed questions is a simple yes or no. For our document, we read through the story and answered the questions using our own words/comment tool to share our opinions/ideas. Group 2 made a google video, we took turns sharing six facts about what happened in the past (Tragedy disaster). We used our smart searching skills and explained what happened in a short sentence in our own words. An example of this is “The disaster occurred on Christmas Eve, with many passengers travelling home to be with families, adding to the tragedy of the event”. We enjoyed learning about volcanoes.

Diary world war one

LI: To retell an event in history through the fictional eyes of someone who was there.

For literacy we have been looking at the events that took place at ANZAC during WW1. We reaserched photos and saw many unsettling things soldiers had to go through in war.

we also watched videos about what life was like in the trenches  we also went through this site called walking with the Anzacs. before we recorded our diary entry framework we of course needed to write our entry and then we used Google vids to recorded our diary, I enjoyed this because it helped me learn about history and what happened in the past.

Podcasting ft:Samuel Marsden

For Literacy we have been using our Inquiry knowledge to help us write questions that we might have asked Reverend Samuel Marsden had we had the chance to meet him and talk to him. This was a fun activity because we took on the roles of Samuel Marsden and the Time Traveller’s Podcast team. It was like we experienced actually meeting him.

We learned that when you are recording a podcast expression is everything! It makes what we have to say more engaging.

Migration Map : Kuaka

For this activity we needed to create a map that shows how long the kuaka birds fly for and where the kuaka birds migrate to.

Kuaka birds, also known as bar-tailed godwits, love to hang out near the water, especially in places like estuaries, mudflats, beaches, and coastal marshes, where they find lots of yummy food.

Every year, as winter approaches, the Kuaka fly north to the breeding grounds of Alaska, stopping off in Korea and Japan for a rest and some food on the way. On the return journey, as our summer approaches, they fly directly to New Zealand, a trip of endurance with no food, water, or rest; nearly 12,000 km non-stop.

Did you know that the Kuaka bird holds the world record for the longest flight?

Dot to Dot connections : The kuaka

LI: To draw the lines between the words to show how the connections you have made.

For this activity, we created a DLO showing our Dot to Dot Connections of the Kuaka Bird. We used the scribble tool to connect each word and write down information that is related to the text. For example : Migration and Habitat (The Kuaka birds migrate from Alaska to NZ to have a safe environment). We used our prior knowledge to figure out some information about the Kuaka Bird. Something we enjoyed while doing this activity was collaborating and communicating to each other to grab different ideas and learn from one another.

The Kuaka

LI: To create an infographic that tells others about the migration of the kuaka

For this task we had worked in our reading groups but had completed this task individually  I enjoyed researching about the kuaka and how they survived.

Something interesting I found out about the Kuaka was the have a nonstop flight from New Zealand to Alaska and they can fly one place to another under a week!! That really amazed me, I had never known there could be a bird breed that strong to fly one place to another under a week.

From this DLO I can see a lot of information about the Kuaka bird appearance, fun facts, habitat and diet talking about where it lives and what it eats and super fun facts about it and when did they come to New Zealand.
