Multiplication

Group 3 just finished practicing multiplication using an algorithm which is a step-by-step method for solving the problem. We learned how to do the multiplication correctly and make sure our answers are accurate. The part we liked most was figuring out the problem by following the right strategies.

Building our class culture

For this collaboration task we worked in groups and had each part of our leader to draw. We drew it based off the picture we got. Our leader Sir Edmund Hillary was a famous explorer and mountain climber. He is well known to be the first person to climb up Mount Everest and he has encouraged us that anything is possible.

My first flight

Mrs Anderson read us the book ‘First Flight’ by June Crebbin. We talked about the narrators point of view and used our Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what the story might look like when told in the first person. Me and my partner created this story and wrote it in first person as if we were Blink who was the main character in the book. Something I liked about this task was being able to ask Gemini Gem for feedback and adivce and how Gemini Gem gave us simple feedback when we upgraded our prompt with more detail.

As the sun took its place, allowing the moon to rise, a wisp of gentle breeze through the forest made me shiver as I started to prepare myself for my first flight ever, mentally and physically.

My talons gripped the branch tightly and I was about to take one talon off until a gust of wind almost blew me over and I quickly held back onto the branch and my fear got a hold of my confidence.
The quite small branch shook slightly with the wind but I tried not to get that hold of me and built up my courage and thought that I was finally ready to soar in the sky with the rest of the parliament calling my name.

But as my eyes filled with curiosity I took a peep over the long branch only to see how elevated I was.
My wings tingled just by looking at the distance from the branch. I was terrified and I could only think of the worst, I couldn’t bear the thought of everything going wrong and falling into the dark and cold abyss.
My Mother, who sensed my overwhelming fear, sauntered next to me and as just I lost all hope of flying Mother reassured me and she took me under her wing.

“Don’t fret little one, we have all been there before and you need to remember that I am here with you.” Mother comforted me.
“But what if everything goes wrong and I mess up my first flight? I would be known as the owl who messed up his first flight!” I exclaimed in fear.

“It’s fine, you can only be scared of something if you make it scary. So you should learn that you should take chances. I believe in you.” Mother reassured me with her gentle and kind words.
I then started to gain more hope in myself and as Mother stepped back to give me space to finally fly.
My confidence and courage began to skyrocket. The only thing I could think of was to just take that risk, only then would it all be over and done with, I prepared myself once more, ready to take action. My wings were spread wide ready to glide with my talons set loose, I stood tall prepared for the wind to blow me over.

I wasn’t scared this time. I took my first leap of faith by relaxing my talons causing them to set loose letting me fall. I was flying! Mother and I were hovering across the quiet and sleeping city, from then I have never been so happy. — “Don’t let overthinking kill your happiness because you can only be scared of something if you make it scary.”

Social Influence

LI: To evaluate peer pressure, digital interactions and social influences

We unpacked how in a world of followers and influencers, how we can stay the ‘Navigator’ of our own lives. Loraya and I  enjoyed learning about peer pressuring and social influencing because we hadn’t known that the biggest trends we contributed in, (examples: ice bucket challenge; Japanese cheesecake)  was all just us getting influenced by other social media creators. Our lesson learnt from this is to always choose your own path because even if your the “boring friend” you should always choose to do the right things.

How we honour the Treaty of Waitangi?

LI: To understand what honouring the treaty means.

We explored the different ways on how we can honour the Treaty of Waitangi . The Treaty of Waitangi is important because in 1840 Feburary 6th represents the signing of the Tiriti o Waitangi. While doing this activity Aryna and I found out that even if you think you do not take part in Waitangi you have obviously participated in either going to Matariki lights or even greeting people with “Kia ora”.

Life in the annex

LI:To write a description of life with the Frank family in the annex in 1942

LS2 read the story “Anne frank” and listened to her experience of how it was like between the war with Jewish and the Germany and how living in the annex felt like. Our challenge for reading was called the “2 minute challenge” where we wrote as many sentences as we could before the timer ends with the following words from the book. Mrs Anderson created a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what life would have been like in the annex, what we felt and why we felt that way, Valencia and I enjoyed working with the Gemini Gem because of the suggestions and feedback they replied to us with.

 Life in the annex

As the bookshelf started to shudder it reminded me very quickly that just outside our precious place of safety, 1942 was a year of war. The German leader had decided that our culture, the one our beloved jewish people treasured so much, meant we had become their objects of persecution. Something that was relentless.

Each night our annex was silent with only the sound of the clock outside chiming every 15 minutes. Each room felt so cramped with people, you could hear the heartbeats of those beside you who feared being discovered. We held our breaths, praying those wearing the German boots would give up the search. They were carrying out aggressively around our bookshelf. An evocative noise from outside of the house caught their attention. As their heavy footsteps faded down the steep stairs we heard a metallic click, finally we breathed sighs of relief that filled the cramped spaced room like a heavy weight lifting off our shoulders. Still knowing this occurance would be a continuous loop but we’re numb to the fear now.

Addition Algorithim DLO

This week for maths, LS2 has been focusing on solving equations using algorithms. From the DLO we can see that we start off by aligning our numbers, add from the right head to the left and just after you’ve done these steps you shall know that if the numbers add above ten you carry the number before to the next column.  You are welcome to have a look at our DLO to help you have a good understanding on how to do Addition algorithim.

Subtraction DLO

LI: to cauculate to difference of whole numbers using algorithims

Group 3 was learning to do subtraction in algorithms An algorithm is a set of steps to solve a equation. Group 3 created a step by step DLO on how to do subtraction with whole numbers using algorithims, Main thing to look out for is to see if you can subtract one small number by a big number (which you cant). Please have a look at our DLO based on subtraction to help.
